Background
A biotech customer manufactures a number of products including drugs for the treatment of rare genetic diseases. One of the company’s manufacturing facilities produces about half of the company's worldwide output. The production process is very complex, with multiple products and processes that contend for shared resources. Currently, the manufacturing planning and scheduling process is manual and iterative, relying principally on the experience and "tribal knowledge" of the scheduler and the production team.
