The ability to forecast demand for a product can be a major challenge for any business, particularly when production is dependent on other business activities. A large CD manufacturer was incurring considerable expense due to high set-up costs on frequent and small production runs with low margins. The company needed to reduce the set-up costs on these smaller lots in order to become more profitable without sacrificing its ability to supply its customers with just-in-time product.
